View Full Version : Adding New Remote Membership

I have made several attempts to install a new remote membership and keep receiving the following error message:

* Remote Membership: failed to connect to FTP server www..com (ERROR: Net::FTP: connect: timeout)

This directory was previously secured with John's Little Script.

I have double checked the ftp server, username, password and directory as well as the url. I have tried several ftp directory versions (i.e. /html_public/directory.../directory, etc.).

Any suggestions?

Hi Jeff, Your post was modified to remove the link to a site.

Hi Jeff,

Try it without the WWW.

Quite a few servers ftp don't work with the WWW.

Hi Brian!

Thanks for the reply!

Do you mean under the FTP Server field as in using ".com" instead of "www.com"? I tried that as well as using "http://q.com" under the URL field. Same error message.

Jeff

Hi Jeff, your post has been modified as links to other sites are not permitted in this forum, even if it isn't your site! Thank you.

Hi Jeff,

Yes that is what I meant.

Are you sure it is a remote membership, i.e. on a different server or FQDN (reseller account) on the same server or is it actually a local membership?

Also if you previously used JLS - it uses a different method for protection (.htaccess) is different - to disable JLS first you will need to follow the instructions in the JLS readme file (renaming the .htaccess and .htaccess_old and running a check/fix to update the current members).

Thanks again Brian!

Definitely a remote server...hosted by different companies, I installed Delavo on a brand new domain with a new hosting account, etc.

The site I am attempting to add as a remote membership had the JLS installed, but no members yet...was "playing" with a site that had not been launched yet. So, I deleted all the JLS files and it is open.

There must be a reason why FTP is timing out.

Did you check with your host support?
Your FTP connection?
Is Net::FTP installed correctly?
The FTP log file?

Obviously in thousand of cases Remote Membership works perfectly.
You must check on your host side, where you want the remote membership.

Thanks Andre!

I have not had any other FTP issues, for example, using Dreamweaver.

How do I check with the host company...in other words, how do I tell them what I am attempting to do?

Jeff,

Just tell them you're using a script that attempts to connect
to your hosting account through FTP and that Net::FTP is
timing out, and you want to know why?

Thanks Andre...I appreciate it!!

I have sent a request to the host company.

Thanks again!

I have not received a reply from the host support as yet...

I did try the local membership addition...no problem.

I also set up foldere and did remote membership additions on two separate sites that I have...both on separate servers...and I still have the same issue:
* Remote Membership: failed to connect to FTP server URL Deleted by Admin. Reason: You cannot post a link to your site in the body of your post (ERROR: Net::FTP: connect: timeout)

I have gone through the video, the instructions...checked and double checked...still to no avail. There must be something I am doing on all the adds that is not allowing me to connect.

(hand held open)...confused, but not giving up yet.

I may have to go back to JOS...didn't have a problem with that.

If anyone has any further suggestions, let me know.

Thanks!

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The server where you have Delavo installed seems to be the problem - it (as Andre says) is not letting you connect via ftp to another server.

There could be any number of reasons - some common ones:

1. The new hosting account is not setup correctly (FTP).
2. The I.P. address of the new hosting account is blacklisted (unlkely but worth checking).
3. The receiving servers need to have a whitelist rule created with the new server I.P.

Have a look at error logs after doing a test on both ends.

Thanks Brian!

I contacted the host company (Bluehost) and they said, "...out going connections are blocked on the shared IPs of our servers, if you have a dedicated IP we can whitelist that port and unblock it."

So I added the dedicated IP address feature and how I get this error when attempting to login to Delavo: "Sorry, your license does not allow to install the script on domain XXXXXXXX"

I put in a ticket to Delavo Help...does it sond like I need to change the registration of Delavo? I didn't know I needed a dedicated IP address for Delavo.

Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

The registration of Delavo is to a domain name (or should be) not an I.P. Address.

It may take some hours for your new i.p. address to match up to your domain where Delavo is registered (can take up to 48 hours although most hosts it takes around 6 hours).

Strictly speaking you don't need a dedicated I.P. address for Delavo - in your case it is the hosting company who are calling the shots on what you can and cannot do with FTP outgoing connections.

I would give it a few hours to see if the problem with the domain name resolves itself.

Thanks Brian...I appreciate your quick response.

Yes, I understand about them calling the shots...well, the cost wasn't much to satisfy ($30 a year for a dedicated IP).

Once it resets, I'll keep my fingers crossed and will be up and running.

Thanks again!

Hey...Yo...Brian and Andre!!!

Thanks for your help...oh, sure it cost me $30 extra per year, but I do have a dedicated IP address...that's a good thing, right?

Anyway, very seriously...thank you for your help! All is up and running and did a test to setup a remote membership...done deal.

Should I put a forum note with the subject, "Remote Memberships and Bluehost...need dedicated IP address"...would that be helpful for others?

Take care!!!

Hi Jeff,

You are welcome - glad it is sorted.

I did start a general hosting issues thread at http://delavo.com/support/index.php/topic,42.0.html - perhaps that would be a good place to post this?
