Need explanation for Paypal IPN

Hi,

Until now I'm still unclear on the function of "Forward IPN to another system (enter a full URL starting with http://)" under setting up the Paypal payment processor.

I've read the manual and it doesn't explain what it is either.

Is that really necessary for most people? What's the main purpose for it?

Hope someone can shed some light.
