View Full Version : Hosting Issues Guideline

Hi,

I thought I would post this here as a guideline for anyone experiencing hosting issue related problems.

Not all hosting companies operate your hosting account in the same way.

Some are more security concious than others - some allow things to be done in some directories - others do not.

What I can tell you for sure is that Delavo (TM) installs correctly on a reseller account that I have through John Delavera (which in turn is a dedicated server at Liquidweb).

I also have hosting accounts with Dreamhost - Hostgator and a separate Liquidweb VPS (where my Fantasos (TM) is installed).

Working with your web host is the way forward and sometimes takes time - hostgator do seem to be switched on with support issues though.

99.99% of these issues can be resolved and if not by your web host (after some time) then the best advice I can give is to get a good hosting account that is fully comatible with Delavo (TM) even if it is only to host that script and to be honest getting your customers, sales and delivery right is paramount.

Brian
Happy JVManager (TM) - Fantasos (TM) - Delavo (TM) user.

Brian,

The only thing I ran into during installation was, when I input the DB info and all, it wouldn't "cycle." So, I shot an email to my host support and told them what I was trying to do, where and using which scripts. Got an email back in about 5 minutes explaining that it was a "security shield" at their end and it had now been tweeked so I was free to proceed. I did, DELAVO did and it's in now.

If someone runs into this, don't start ripping out and reinstalling your files and DB. A simple email will handle the problem.

Brain and other members,

I've a hostgator account and after uploading got an error page when trying to access Delavo. This was soon sorted after a short email to their support.

So, wherever you've hosted Delavo, give their support the details of the problem and hopefully it should get sorted quickly.

Hope this helps...

Wayne

It's also important (to make their job easier and get your problem solved quicker) to give your web host as much specific information as you can when you ask for support. Try to give them information from your error log in cpanel (or whatever control panel they use) too, if possible. For example, if you're having problems with DELAVO giving you a 403 error and it's installed at yourdomain.com/delavo you might tell them something like this, it should help you get the problem fixed a lot faster than opening a ticket that just says "Help, I'm trying to install a script and I keep getting an error.":

I'm trying to install a script called DELAVO and after what appears to be a successful install, I get a 403 error. The script is installed on [servername] in /home/[yourcpanelname]/public_html/delavo and can be accessed at http://[yourdomain]/delavo

[include relevant line from error log if possible]

You can usually get the server name from your cpanel or from the "welcome email" you got when you first signed up for your hosting account (you did save that, didn't you? lol)

I run my own helpdesk for software/scripts I've written and patches/plugins I've written for other scripts, and I can't tell you how frustrating it is when someone opens a ticket that says "It's not working" and doesn't include any specific information that might help me identify, reproduce and fix the problem.

Bad experience with FastHosts (UK) - probably would install if their support would help (they didn't).

Anybody out there with a positive experince with them?

It may help some to understand that UNIX/Linux distributions are acceptable
since UNIX is actually fairly rare with most reseller accounts.

I did have this question come up once.

Actually I don't know of many web hosts that don't offer some flavor of unix (usually Linux.. less often, FreeBSD) for their shared and reseller accounts. Being free operating systems and not licensed by "number of domains" or "number of concurrent connections" (or other licensing limits Microsoft likes to put on their server OSs), Linux and FreeBSD reduce the total cost of ownership for a web host so I'm sure most of them actually prefer to use those operating systems instead of Windows. (and I'm actually a Microsoft Certified Partner.. but I'll tell you straight up and 100% honestly, unless you need ASP.NET, Linux beats Windows for hosting as far as cost and performance are concerned).

Hi Steve,

I'm a certified windows basher :--) I have to agree with your comment on the servers.

My comment about UNIX/linux was to clarify in the written requirement
that Linux meets the qualification of being a UNIX system.

Some of the people being newly introduced to the JVM family aren't even sure what a server is.

That was the only reason for my post of UNIX/linux.

All the good ones are Linux :--)

Here's a summary of the issue and solution with Bluehost:

I was originally using Bluehost with a shared IP address for my Delavo and the installation went smoothly, but I ran into an issue when adding remote memberships...I kept getting this error:
* Remote Membership: failed to connect to FTP server www.domainname.com (ERROR: Net::FTP: connect: timeout)

I inquired with Bluehost (where I installed Delavo) and here's what Bluehost Support said:
"Pretty much all out going connections are blocked on the shared IPs of our servers, if you have a dedicated IP we can whitelist that port and unblock it. If you do not currently have a dedicated IP you can purchase one via your cpanel, it is thirty dollars a year."

I kept the same hosting package, but added a dedicated IP address and, yes, $30 per year for the dedicated IP address. My yearly hosting cost totals are now $89.

Then requested an open port 21 outbound for TCP connections (the standard port protocol used by FTP). The response by Bluehost Support was very quick!

Ah, and all is well in my world once again...until my next snafu, but it's good to know you guys (and gals?) are around...good job Brian and Andre...thank you very much!

Aloha!

Hi,

Just want to confirm that Delavo installs without problems on Dreamhost for any Dreamers out there :)

Brian
be a problem with the support desk plugin. It took about 2 months to get it right and I had to install and setup .procmail to forward messages. Even then there was some work needed by either DELAVO support or DreamHost support. I've never heard back from either one as to what needed doing but it's working fine.

I also found that several other scripts like "John's Little Script" wouldn't run. Haven't tried them on the VPS I now have. They would install OK but could never login with the admin id and password. Finally gave up on trying to run them.

Probably all the setup is common knowledge to both support teams now so it may not be a problem in the future.

BrianSome of the other scripts won't run and the support desk plug will take some special "work" on one end or the other. After that it works fine. I had to set up a .procmail forwarding, then the support had to do something. Never found out what was done.
